Stay on Track
  Elijah Masek-Kelly

When the grinding wheels
Began to sing
Like boiling moray eels
And the brakes built
Asbestos crescents
Beneath our eyes

The darkness finally fell
And we were whipping

Through a tunnel of trees
In a ragged rush of rock
And metal and wind

With the locomotive lumbering
I nearly nodded off
And if any mistake was fatal
Sleep came too easily here

The crack of stars
Gave me patience

But as I saw them move
Over time
All I could count on
Was the fear
In his eyes

And the train moving forward
